Hello there! Welcome to the first volume of Nat's Declassified Sustainable Survival Guide, a monthly blog series exploring everything and anything about the environment and sustainability. This week, I've listed some of the most eye-opening and slightly soul-crushing pieces of environmental content on the internet to light your activist fire. I came across this content while on my own journey to learning more about the non-subtle climate crisis and how human actions impact the earth. So, sit back, try to relax and watch, read or listen to at least like one of the things below, okay?

Our Changing Climate

The truth about online shopping

I stumbled upon this youtube channel over a year ago, and quite frankly, it's one of my favorite channels for environmental content. This Youtuber creates video essays on cultural players and topics in the context of environmentalism, informing the viewer of the subject's eco-impacts, good and/or bad. In this video, he breaks down the trials and tribulations of online shopping on the environment. After watching a few videos, their narration and editing are oddly calming, despite in-depth discussing the world's well...impending doom lol

VOX

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Next to the Golden Rule & D.A.R.E., this was the most preached cliche I remember from Middle School. Turns out, it's not quite standing the test of time and here's why: Recycling may not be as effective as you think, nor is it necessarily working. In fact, in some cases, it might just be better to throw out that one-use plastic. A friend of mine shared this podcast with me a while back and it's kinda a lot (took me two listens to catch all the information). However, there's nothing like some content around fire to set off that flame in your brain (fire puns over here, you're welcome)

The Ugly Truth Of

Fast Fashion

Fashion man, I love it but also yikes. In the past, we've heard a lot about the industry's ethical infractions in the form of sweatshops and sadly, even child labor; however, not to be more of a downer, but I'm gonna be a bit more of a downer: on top of that, fashion, particularly fast fashion, contributes to 10% of humanity's carbon emissions (more than international flights & maritime shipping combined). But, if you think fast fashion companies are being more considerate of this fact through 'eco' initiatives, you might want to watch this.

This may have been a lot (or not, I can't predict your feelings). My gut reaction was anxiousness and confusion. Whether you might have already been aware of this information, had presumptions or are just getting light of it, I think it's safe to say that the link between humanity's actions and climate change is a mind field, made up of many different walls and complicated problems creating a global issue. With that said, well-researched and thoughtful content provide insight into the impact of our daily consumption on this planet, bringing us closer to solutions.

Check back next week, for a new chapter!
